Amanda Bates ASGFA

Biography

Amanda is driven by a delight in drawing and an insatiable curiosity for how things work. She has a particular interest in the role of illusion and folklore in our interpretation of the unknown. Her loosely intricate, observational drawing captures a version of reality in which wild stories roam the English countryside.

Amanda can’t remember not drawing. She drew throughout her childhood, doodled in the margins of her two science degrees and dabbled in illustration as part of her career as a technical communicator. In 2014, life events caused her to reconsider her priorities and she became a full time artist. She is currently engaged in an extended study of trees in pen and ink, but also works in several other media, including digital, paint and printmaking. She is based in north Hampshire.
