Stephen Baker SGFA

The flow of appearances is common property but an individual’s response can approximate to or depart from the phenomenal norm.

Paul Klee wrote about the “Thinking Eye” and Stephen has pursued his understanding of these words by developing a schematic approach to pictorial depiction.

He uses graphic media such as sgraffito, inscribed gesso and “griffelkunst” – the art of the stylus.

Stephen was born in the Black Country, in a landscape marked by the products of defunct industries – quarries, rusting machines, mounds of ash, etc. After art studies in the era of the first conceptual movement, he was exposed to the world of calculation, law and logic.

He finds inspiration in the art of historical civilisations and the work of outsider artists.
