Robert Davies SGFA

Biography

I was born in 1940 and brought up in Paddington, London, then Nuneaton and Isleworth, Middlesex. I lived for thirty years near Fitzroy Square, London, and since 1994 in Uplyme, Devon.

I attended the school of art at Twickenham Technical College, one year preliminary study, then three years NDD course. I worked for many years in advertising and studios, then in freelance illustration and graphic design.

Over the years I have found that I most enjoy watercolour and line drawing. I also work in other media, and in both figurative and abstract modes. I like to express feeling through landscapes and seascapes and the disposition of people and objects within the composition. With abstracts I create mood through use of colour and shape.

I work largely from sketchbooks, but I also enjoy being out in the air and observing everything around me. I continue to look for a way of responding to landscapes and objects that pleases me. Varying my style of work helps me to keep the vision fresh. I go to unregarded settings like boatyards and reclamation yards, where one can find interesting conjunctions of elements. The seafront always provides wonderful light and mood.
