Biography
Pamela Lloyd-Jones studied and taught in Australia before travelling extensively and finally settling in London. Initially a colour field and abstract expressionist painter of large pictures, on moving to the UK Pamela could not find her artistic voice, and still finds that her natural colour palette and marks hail back to her years growing up in the southern hemisphere. She turned to small black and white artworks and exhibited with the Royal Society of Painter-Etcher and Engravers before working in advertising for many years. For the last 20 years she has developed her art practice in two parallel directions: classic commissioned portraiture, and painting and mixed media works, often with a figurative base.
Pamela has been teaching privately for many years, and runs monthly life drawing workshops in west London. She also takes groups abroad several times a year on painting holidays. Morocco is a favourite destination.
She has exhibited in many solo and group shows over the years, and has work in collections in the USA, Costa Rica, Canada, Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, as well as Australia and the UK. Most recently her work has been shown in the London Art Fair, the Works on Paper Fair, the Affordable Art Fair as well as the SGFA Annual Open Exhibition at the Menier Gallery.
Statement
‘My work is full of conflicting passions. I feel I am always learning, and challenging myself, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. The underlying passion in the work, however, is markmaking. The search for the perfect expressive line, whether it is in paint, charcoal, pencil, or pen, or cut with scissors, is the basis of my portraiture practice, as well as landscape, figure or still life. Whatever the subject matter, I feel that I have failed if there is not an emotive engagement with the work.’
