Trained as a painter in the 1960s, for me printmaking seemed a natural extension of the process of observing and recording.

The tactile task of cutting a relief block holds great appeal. Two years of post graduate training in relief printmaking, and many years of teaching sixth form students the technical skills, helped to clarify my own thoughts and responses to the process.

Before I draw and record a landscape, I have observed the area at different times of day in various climatic conditions over a year or more. The process of creating a black and white print from conception to realization may take three or four months, depending on the size of the print.

I do not use black in my colour prints, but instead create dark colours through overlays of transparent ink.

The source of my inspiration is the local environment and personal surroundings in Somerset.
