Barbara Sykes BA (Hons) Fine Art MA SGFA

Biography

Barbara Sykes has been painting professionally for sixteen years, following an earlier career in textiles. She works full time from her studio at Dean Clough in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Barbara has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and abroad, with work in public and private collections in the UK, America, Spain, Malaysia, Slovenia and France, She has held workshops for all ages and abilities, lectured, and participated in open studios.

Barbara’s paintings and drawings are concerned with the human condition and her feelings about life. The paint is allowed to ebb and flow organically, suggesting the visceral, but never dogmatic. Her work is underpinned with nuanced and intelligent drawing and also contains both a touch of humour and optimism.

Recently she has been using her printmaking skills to create a series of artist’s books, which she hopes to pursue in the future.
Barbara is a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Art.
